  • Chargers take home consolation prize at Proviso West tourney

    The St. Joseph Chargers captured the consolation title at the 59th Proviso West Holiday Tournament, defeating Catholic League rival Leo 59-47 on Dec. 29. Bryce Coleman led the way with 21 points, including 3 of 5 on three-pointers, while adding six rebounds. Kyle Thomas added nine points, five rebounds and six blocked shots, and Markus Becton also contributed nine points. With the victory, the Chargers finished 3-1 in the tournament, raising their overall record to 8-6.

    St. Joes fell into the losers bracket with a 45-41 loss to Lane Tech in the first round on Dec. 26. Coleman poured in 13 points to lead the scoring, while Thomas pulled down seven rebounds.

    In their second contest, the Chargers got past Crete-Monee 64-61 on Dec. 27, as Thomas provided the offensive spark with 22 point and eight rebounds, while also dominating the paint with eight blocked shots. Jon Robinson chipped in with 16 points and six assists, while J. Caleb Slawinski added nine rebounds.

    To reach the consolation final, the Chargers rode a dominating third quarter to beat Dunbar 59-50 on Dec. 28, building a lead of 22 points in the final stanza. Becton topped all scorers with 14 points, while Slawinski posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas continued his strong play with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Anthony Martin came off the bench to deliver nine points and eight rebounds.
